Default The White Mantle.

My knowledge of the prophecies storyline isn't as god as it was, but...

Why do we hate the white mantle so much?

We come across the shining blade in some mission in the maguuma jungle and at first we thought they were the enemy.

But then they said that they rescued the chosen from the white mantle because they kill the chosen, so they told us to go see for ourselves.

So basically we see the white mantle killing the chosen and then we dicide just to kill them all, no questions asked.

I've only got as far as the bit where you have to ascend but I havent started and of it and I accidently deleted the character that got that far, so we don't even know about the mursaat at that point, we just decided to kill all the white mantle and that they were the enemy just because we saw them killing the chosen.

My question is why?

Why wage war against the White Mantle? It might have something to do with the fact that they're evil d-bags. (just a hunch)

The spin-map doubles as evil-o-meter. Thier dots are red. Plus, that one that camps across the way from Ascalon looked at me funny.

Other than that, yeah, first we're told they're evil, then we see it for ourselves. Although (spoiler) the Mursaat, who employ the mantle, were kinda right about the whole "lets keep this door shut, whaddya say?" business. Oops.

Also, the Mursaat dont serve Abaddonn. They just want a certain armageddon-releasing door to, you know, stay closed. But we cant have that, now, can we? Of course not.

(!!! SPOILER ALERT !!!)

During the "Divinity Coast" mission, the White Mantle task us with bringing the Eye of Janthir to Loamhurst (and also any Chosen we find, for the Bonus objective).

During the "the Wilds" mission, we're tasked with tracking down the Shining Blade (kidnappers of the Chosen, at that time), at the end of which they send us to see the "truth" for ourselves at the Bloodstone.

During the "Bloodstone Fen" mission, we watch as the White Mantle and Justiciar Hablion sacrifice the Chosen on the Bloodstone, after which we attack them and murder the Justiciar.

(end spoiler)

In our (characters') eyes, the murder of the Chosen turns the White Mantle into the "bad guys", simply put. The White Mantle start a witch-hunt for the murderers of Justiciar Hablion (the player) and the Shining Blade in general.

@ Solas: there has never been any proof regarding any Mursaat-Abaddon relationship.

if you have the BMP, play the Saul d'Alessio misssion and play close attention to the dialogue. That explains generally how the White Mantle initially had good intentions but made bad decisions in allying themselves with the Mursaat.

No the Titans and the Lich who freed them were servants of abaddon. The Mursaat were actually keeping the Titans locked up and while ignoring the means their end pursuit was a good one.

Also Shiro saw the future of Cantha from the fortune teller's vision. A totalitarian fascist regime is definitely what everyone was fighting for.

Also we kind of released Palawa Joko in our hasty pursuit of Abaddon. Sure there was an entrance to the desolation from the crystal desert, but we're too busy and important to take it. Lets free up the old scourge of Vabbi.

Then we committed genocide against the dwarves.

We were the bad guys here, we just got to write history.

Keep in mind that the White Mantle killed the chosen ones....aka those with powerful magic like us....not because of what they did, but because of what they might do, they might pose a threat to their power and dominion over the rest of Kryta and prevent them from gaining even more power.

Weren't the chosen killed at the order of the Mursaat because they had the potential to complete the flameseeker prophecies and therefore bring about the destruction of the Mursaat from the release of the Titans?

What? Shiro was tricked to killing the current emperor of his time (which he did). The emperor was never evil, and the Fortune Teller was just a demon, never a real fortune teller.

We killed the Stone Summit, ending a civil war. Then the Deldrimor became stone of their free will. Even then, there are still survivors.

Back on topic: Winnies, you answered your own question. The White Mantle are villains because they kill off the Chosen at the Mursaat's orders. In reality, we were the White Mantle's targets, but they didn't know that until we joined the Shining Blade, and we didn't know until the end of Sanctum Cay mission.

Killing the White Mantle seems at the time like a good idea, just as killing off the Mursaat seems like a good idea. But with the White Mantle dead, chaos ensues in North Kryta since they were the only government North Kryta had. With the Mursaat defeated, the Door of Kamale can be opened. We did only good, but good did not come; instead we ruined the lives of a lot of people.

Is this realistic, something that might happen in the real world? Yes, think of the US invasion of Iraq. Very analogous, an evil dictator and an evil government; obvious that both needed to go. But very terrible consequences followed and continue to follow. I suppose the real world Mursaat are Osama and his fellow terrorists.

And they would have killed us if they had known we were "chosen." That kinda makes them not our friend.

Right. It was all for the greater good. There are other forces at work. As you played through the game for the first time things were relieved to us. We were limited in our knowledge thinking that we knew best even though we did not have the big picture. thus, we were not in full awareness of the devastation we could cause or even that we too..were the few, the proud, the chosen.

Someone once said in Roman times...2000 years ago, "He who wins the war writes the history."

In effect, the white mantle are a more rich and more political version of the taliban. Religious fanatics seeking control through means of killing and oppression.

The Stone Summit were based off of the Third Reich, though they were more racist, less political.

We may have opened the door, which was a bad thing, but we closed it, realizing our mistake.

Shiro was tricked, then he went mad.

Abaddon was the one behind it, Joko was collateral accident, he's quite funny.
